Founded in 1869 to serve the needs of Irish immigrants, Saint Joseph Cathedral is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Manchester. Designed by Patrick C. Keely, the 1869 church building underwent a major expansion that was completed in 1894, when Saint Joseph Parish Church became consecrated as Saint Joseph Cathedral. Following the movement popular after the Second Vatican Council, the high altar, Stations of the Cross, and many other decorations were removed in 1968. In 2014, the diocese began an initiative starting with the installation of similar pieces removed from Holy Trinity Church in Boston after it closed to restore the church’s interior to its original Gothic Revival design.
