The <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gothic_Revival_architecture\" target=\"_blank\">Gothic Revival<\/a> design sparked a major shift from \u201cpuritan simplicity\u201d that would spread across the country. The Christian Monitor wrote, \u201cIt is something of a novelty\u2026yet there is an air of dignity and repose about the whole building, exceedingly appropriate to a Christian temple.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Church\u2019s ground-breaking design also acts a metaphor for its many times forward thinking parish. From its inception, First Parish Church had been a place of discussion, debate and reflection. From providing support to the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Continental_Congress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Continental Congress<\/a> to debating the separation of Maine from Massachusetts to the inspiring moment when <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Harriet_Beecher_Stowe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Harriet Beecher Stowe<\/a> on March 2, 1851 in pew 23 envisioned the book, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Uncle_Tom's_Cabin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Uncle Tom\u2019s Cabin<\/em><\/a>, which portrayed the evils of slavery, these intangible fragments of First Parish Church\u2019s heritage reflects some of the pinnacle moments in U.S. history.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Click here to view the 360-degree panoramic image fullscreen on your iPhone or iPad.
