Completed in 1875, the church&#8217;s highly ornate Gothic Revival Style is atypical of a traditional New England congregational church. While architects <a title=\"Charles Amos Cummings\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Amos_Cummings\" target=\"_blank\">Charles Amos Cummings<\/a> and <a title=\"Willard T. Sears\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Willard_T._Sears\" target=\"_blank\">Willard T. Sears<\/a>&#8216; design intention was to, &#8220;radiate the opulent taste and the sense of optimism and progress of the Industrial Revolution following the Civil War\u201d, the congregation has been recognized for equality and social justice, with such notable congregants as <a title=\"Samuel Sewall\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Samuel_Sewall\" target=\"_blank\">Samuel Sewall<\/a> who published the first anti-slavery writing in the United States in 1700, <em>The Selling of Joseph<\/em>.
