With its origins dating back to 1654, First Churches of Northampton began the same year Northampton was settled by English Puritans. The Churches&#8217; current <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gothic_Revival_architecture\" target=\"_blank\">Gothic Revival<\/a> structure was completed in 1878. Designed by the Boston architectural firm of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peabody_and_Stearns\" target=\"_blank\">Peabody and Stearns<\/a>, the building is constructed using mostly locally sourced materials found in western Massachusetts such as Longmeadow brownstone, which gives the exterior its distinctive color. Providing a warm glow throughout the sanctuary, the large stained glass windows are made of leaded colored cathedral glass. Of particular note are the two memorial windows: the west wall window is entitled \u201cThe Stream of Life\u201d (1899) and is signed by <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louis_Comfort_Tiffany\" target=\"_blank\">Louis Comfort Tiffany<\/a> and the window on the east side is titled \u201cNoli Me Tangere\u201d and attributed to Tiffany\u2019s workshop. \u200bThe First Churches of Northampton&#8217;s building is a noted example of Gothic Revival architecture and is included on the National Registry as part of the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Northampton_Downtown_Historic_District\" target=\"_blank\">Downtown Northampton Historic District<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Click here to view the 360-degree panoramic image fullscreen on your iPhone or iPad. \u200bIn 1988, The First Church of Christ in Northampton and the First Baptist Church of Northampton merged to become First Churches of Northampton.
